Dear Armando: I am heading state-side and I'll be in Miami for a few days with my kids. Any suggestions? - Staying in South Beach
Dear South Beach: As they say on that popular '80s police show, "If Miami hasn't got it, they haven't invented it yet." That being said, if you have kids over the age of 3 and you have to pay full-price for entrance fees, your trip might break the bank. If you are feeling really energetic down at sea-level, you can get more for your money by purchasing a Go Miami Card. Unfortunately, you have to visit three attractions a day in order to get your money's worth since most of the attractions cost upwards of $20.
One of my favorite places to take kids is the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in the same park as the Miami Metro Zoo. From the gift shop where you buy tickets (adults, $10; children over 3yrs. $4), the museum doesn't look like anything special but, there are four tracks with trains that kids can explore inside and out. There is also an outbuilding full of model trains and a Thomas the Tank Engine play area. On weekends, take a train ride for an extra fee. This museum can be visited in conjunction with the zoo, or you can spend the morning running the rails until your kids are ready to "pull the pin."
For more bang for your buck, travel along US 41 (Tamiami Trail), toward the Everglades and visit one of the many airboat parks like Everglades Safari Park for an eco-adventure tour. For about $20/person you get a 45-minute airboat ride (bring earplugs or use the toilet paper offered by park staff) chock full of corny jokes and alligator and crocodile sightings. You'll also see a variety of birds, flowers, reptiles, and maybe even a turtle or six. Afterward, enjoy an alligator and wildlife show including the opportunity to hold a baby alligator. There is also a trail along enclosed grassy areas where you can view a variety of gators and crocs.
Editor's Note: Looking for something even less expensive? At Dadeland Mall, the security officers will give you a free tour of the five parking garages if you happen to misplace your rental car (or so I've heard).
