The Boy and I have been in Miami for over a week to see docs about his poopy issue... or non-poopy issue. On the 19th we went to a gastroenterologist at Miami Children's Hospital. Our past experience (when The Boy got the 105 degree fever on our way through here in June) was very positive with MCH, but we were sorely disappointed with this doctor.
Not only did we wait 2 hours to see the doc, but then he only spent 15 minutes with us. He didn't ask us any questions, hadn't read the material our doc had emailed him, didn't examine The Boy (except to listen to his chest/back), and basically acted like we weren't in the room. He prescribed a laxative which, I later found out, had been removed from the market because it was "too dangerous" according to the pharmacist. The doc's backup idea was to use Miralax. Apparently, in the brief time he spent with us in the exam room he figured out that I am an idiot, so he drew a picture and wrote down instructions telling me to give The Boy 34g of Miralax - or one capful - mixed with 8 ounces of non-milk beverage.
After "sleeping on it" I realized that I was really unhappy with the way we were treated, so I found another doc at University of Miami to see us. Turns out thatin order to examine the abdomen, the patient should be laying down. And, oh by the way, a capful of Miralax is only 17g and The Boy should have been taking 51g per day. That sounds like a lot, I know. It is. The new doctor actually listened to us. She examined The Boy. And she explained what is going on in his colon.
We tried the new dosage for 5 days and I could only get two full doses in him - after Laura (visiting us from Kentucky) revealed that Yoo-Hoo isn't a milk-beverage but water and chocolate. Bingo! So, three Yoo-Hoos a day for the boy and we got the super-dose of Miralax in him. Still no chunky poop... just liquid. Sorry, did I not mention that this blog has explicit material in it, not appropriate for all audiences? Apparently, we'll know the blockage is out when he has a substantial poop come out. So the new doctor decided to switch back to Lactulose (the stuff we take back home), but at a higher dosage. Instead of taking 10ml a day, he's taking 90ml a day. Guess what... still only 2 poops a day and nothing near "chunky." Seriously, I had to change MY clothes after changing his diaper on Tuesday.
Plan C? If he doesn't have a "massive output" by tomorrow morning, then he is going to be admitted for a "go lightly" treatment. That's the stuff they give you before a colonoscopy. I am kind of nervous about the procedure because Rachel (when she visited us from cold, cold Philly) said that she knows a guy who broke his leg when he got a colonoscopy because the Go Lightly made him have to poop so bad... he ran to the bathroom, slipped, broke his leg, and got poop all over. And to top it all off, he still had to have a colonoscopy!! Luckily, they aren't doing that to The Boy at this stage.
So anyone who thinks we're on vacation here in Miami, please stand corrected. Once again, Miami proves to be a $h!th*(e.
