Years ago my parents, brother, sister, and I (or at least three of us) were watching a thirty-minute stand-up comedy show after dinner. The comedian was talking about how he and his nine siblings used to fight over who was their mom's favorite. The comedian's mom always said, "I have ten fingers and I wouldn't cut any of them off," which prompted her offspring to question, "Who's the thumb?" It took about half-a-second before someone asked my mom which of her three children were the thumbs. As far as I know, my mom hasn't answered this question (although maybe she swore the other two to secrecy?), but I have always been pretty confident that I am a thumb, if not the right thumb. And now that I have a kid of my own (with another on the way) and there is a strict competition in our house between my husband and the dog for the extra thumb assignment I realize that I am "all thumbs."
This blog is dedicated to my family and especially my thumbs... all four of them.
